About

Who am I?

Hello! My name is Nicholas, and I’ve been learning Japanese for a while, not entirely sure how long. But I can say that I have been learning Japanese the wrong way for far longer than I’ve been learning it the right way. In high school, I developed a taste for Japanese music, specifically groups like ゲスの極み乙女 and ヨルシカ, and eventually developed a fascination for the language and the culture.

For years, I only used my fascination in Japanese music and the occasional YouTube video to fuel my passion for learning, but never took studying seriously or attempted to really learn out of fear of failure or being bad at it. However, that changed in 2023 when I made a dedicated attempt to really learn the language. Most of my learning has been done since then.

What’s the purpose of this site?

I’ve found a real joy in language learning that has driven me to become proficient and continue studying a language that I would otherwise not have much value knowing in my day-to-day life. I would like to share that passion of language learning with engaging study material, a realistic approach to language learning that made sense for me, my personal experience with self-study and the pitfalls I’ve fallen into along the way, and some fun information that can expand your knowledge and interest to keep you going in your studies!

The resources I’m giving are highly personal to my learning experience, but I feel can broadly apply to many people along their learning journey. The study material I’m providing is also highly personal to my learning experience but provides a type of learning that you don’t get with other study material; teaching in an approach that doesn’t rely on English language translation to give understanding of concepts, and instead attempts to explain the nuance of the Japanese language through the way in which Japanese works.
